A Day in The Life: Mayada Ahmed

Age: 19
Major: Biology
Second Concentration: Pre-Health
Class: 2020

Mayada Ahmed heard about RU-N HLLC at a campus open house and was inspired by the program’s social change platform and its position on honors.

“HLLC takes honors to a better level; it’s about who you are, not just your test scores,” said Ahmed. “I look around and see that many in Newark may not have the best grades, but they have the aspiration and drive that can help them to make the biggest change in our society.”

Inspired by her mom, a doctor who works in underserved communities, Mayada seeks to work in the area of neurology and trauma, and to assist those who have limited access to healthcare.  “I am very interested in health care as a social issue,” said Ahmed.  “The issues of health care affordability and efficiency, as well as escalating insurance costs and how they can be alleviated, are issues that are important to me.”

Typical Day:

Morning:

  • Wakes up in her quad-room at University Square; a room she shares with three other HLLC scholars, including her twin sister, who is also a bio/pre-med student.
  • Makes her way to soccer practice on RU-N’s women’s soccer team
  • Grabs a granola bar and then heads off to classes, except on Wednesday when she goes to her part-time job.

Mid-Day:

  • Grabs a quick lunch or light snack at Stonsby cafeteria
  • Engages in one or more of her social activities, which include: Muslim Student’s Association, Student Government Association, and the Minority Association of Pre-Health Students.
  • She can often be found spending her spare time or studying in the cafeteria, library or the on-campus Starbucks located in the Paul Robeson Campus Center.

Late-Day:

  • On Tuesday and Thursday, a quick bite suffices for dinner as Mayada attends evening classes.  On other days, Mayada spends her evening studying and spending time with her roommates and friends.

Mayada’s Awesome Experience:

Taking HLLC’s “Global Citizens in a Global World” course in the fall of 2016.

“HLLC professors bring their real-life experience to the classes they teach. This class was taught by Newark’s own, Junius Williams, who has experience in effecting change and being revolutionary.  It was an awesome experience to learn directly from him.”
